Review Terms 3.0

Posted by The-Great-One - February 9th, 2012

The Newgrounds redesign has come and with it a new review system. The 0-10 has been taken away and has thus been replaced with a stars system. Now some people are saying that it's the same with a bit of different math, however that can get confusing. So I'm redoing these terms again to accommodate the new system. Also I've decided to drop the word flash since it's pretty much an outdated term when it comes to the many different programs used to create animations and games.

This is a basic scale in which you will see in my movie and game reviewing. If you want me to review one of your submissions then kindly leave me a comment here with the URL to it or send me a PM.

I will always label submissions on the cheers, jeers scale. Cheers means I liked it, I have praise to say, kudos. Jeers means I didn't like it, I loathe it, I have criticisms to make.

NOTE: IF YOUR MOVIE OR GAME DOES NOT HAVE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING IN IT THEN YOU WILL NOT BE GRADED ON IT. UNLESS UPON VIEWING THE NEED FOR ONE OF THE FOLLOWING COMES UP FOR A MORE OVERALL EXPERIENCE.

Artwork

This can vary depending on what your movie or game was supposed to be about. I look at what kind of style you're representing and what all you bring. If you use another persons art (unless they're credited as co-author) such as sprites or if the presentation is entirely video then you will not receive points.

Animation

This counts in every movie and game, even ones involving sprites. Everything must move nice and smooth. If your submission is entirely live action then it won't count, unless with the use of special effects. This is one of the crucial parts next to artwork, if it doesn't move properly then it will cost you.

Presentation [ Games Only ]

This will now represent the artwork and animation in a game, since both together are required for a better experience. While in movies, the animation could be done differently from the artwork and one could look better than the other and the movie could still come off well. With games both are needed.

Sound

This is an overall scoring of all sound effects presented in the submission. Sound effects are crucial, if they don't match with the animation then it won't be presentable. When I say sound I mean sound, this doesn't count in voice acting or background music. I will grade everything from the title screen, menu, movie/game, all the way to the credits and easter eggs.

Music

We have the Audio Portal. There are many talented musicians there. If you pick a good song from there and it matches well with your movie or game as background music, then you won't have much of a problem. Using commercial music is a bit trickier to manage, so choose wisely.

Voice

With the advent of the Audio Portal comes a lot of great voice actors as well. The voices must sync up properly, the voice actor must match the character and sound well. We don't need any pops or hisses or sound like that all the voice work was recorded in an air duct.

Story / Concept

This is how the movie or game was pretty much written. Everything has a story or in most cases with games a concept. Is this a story that we go from point A to point B? Is it a parody? Is it just something neat? I grade on writing quite highly so I hope you have a story or a concept that will keep me entertained.

Controls [ Games Only ]

When it comes down to games, the most crucial part is being able to actually play it. If your controls work well you will get high points. If not, then not only will I be ticked off, but you'll certainly get some nasty words and criticism from me. Oh yeah and it'll cost ya.

Gameplay [ Games Only ]

No this isn't the same as Concept or Controls. Being able to play the game is nice, but how well does it play. An example is it's easy to make Mario run and jump, but where does he need to go and what's the best way to get him there?

So how do you get ranked in all these? Well with my rankings system of course. There are seven different rankings you can get and depending on what is in your movie or game depends on if you get graded on it or not.

I can offer out a total of 5 Stars in each grade giving either Cheers or Jeers. Cheers are good stars while Jeers are bad stars. They will all go to your score no matter what. There is no real deduction off your overall score just the ranking you get. We'll go from highest to lowest.

Masterful - [ 5 Stars ]

These are rarely handed out, when they are though I truly mean it. It means that whatever was ranked with this is in my eyes perfect, no flaws whatsoever that I can see. There are some movies and games that have gotten ranked in all Masterful and thus I have them compiled in my Masterful List.

Superb - [ 4 - 4.5 Stars ]

It wasn't perfect, but chances are I found something to nitpick about it or it just didn't meet that really high mark. This is still good though and it shows that your work is above average.

Great - [ 3.5 Stars ]

You did an awesome job, were there some other things you could have done? Absolutely. However it is important that you learn and improve from this point.

Good - [ 2.5 - 3 Stars ]

You know what you're doing, but this means average at best. There is certainly room for improvement and you at least got the tools and the knowledge to grow.

Okay - [ 2 Stars ]

Good enough to pass, but not good enough to be anything fantastic either. You need to really listen to the criticisms I and others give you if I give you this score.

Bad - [ 1 Star ]

Not one of the worst things in the world, but could certainly be a lot better. Chances are you did something wrong and it needs to be fixed.

Terrible - [ 0 Stars ]

This is rarely used and for good reason. You can get no further down than this. A zero is the worst thing to get and it's the worse thing I like to hand out, but I will do it if I have to.

Confused - [ ? Points ]

If I don't quite understand what you're saying then you will get this. It's not a bad thing... it's just I don't understand what you're doing.

Glitch - [ -2 Points ]

This is a bad thing and I will deduct quite a bit from your overall score because of this. You should always check through a game for any glitches. I can understand sometimes if you miss a glitch, hey it happens... but I will still deduct.

Bonus Point - [ Rounding ]

This affects your overall score only. I will round your score up or down depending on the movie or game if I'm not at an exact number.

Wow, you've put a lot of thought into this. You may be interested in an article by Roger Ebert about his own rating system for movies: http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2008/09/you_gi ve_out_too_many_stars.html
